OUR STORY

Today, Isetan is a leading corporate group in Japan’s retailing industry. Isetan’s departmental stores are domestically and internationally renowned for high quality that ranks top amongst Japan’s top retailers. Isetan first opened its overseas branches in early 1970s and was among the first Japanese retail groups to open in Singapore. In addition to the original operations in Singapore, Isetan has also established its operations in Malaysia, Thailand and China.

In 2010, Isetan Kuala Lumpur celebrated its 20th year in Malaysia. Since then, Isetan has had, and will continue to have, the pleasure of working with over 1000 Malaysian manufactures and designers to develop and produce suitable, and high quality merchandise to cater our wide customer’s needs.

OUR HISTORY

After 10 years of research and market analysis, Isetan opened its first store in Kuala Lumpur at Lot10 Shopping Complex in October 1990, Suria KLCC in May 1998, The Gardens, Mid Valley City in September 2007 and followed by 1 Utama in April 2012. Having its headquarters in Shinjuku-Tokyo, Isetan’s history spans over a century.

1886

Isetan has been known for creativity and ingenuity since it established over a century ago in 1886. In the 1890s, Isetan obtained a high reputation for selling fashionable kimono designs and obi sashes after which Isetan’s name became associated with the latest in fashion apparel.

1965

In 1965, Isetan and other major department stores succeeded in establishing a new numbered sizing system for woman’s apparel.

1972

Isetan became one of the first Japanese retail groups to enter the Asian market. With the continuing expansion plans, Isetan has gradually established its business in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chengdu and Shenyang. To support the international aspects of the merchandising, Isetan also set up overseas representative offices in New York, Paris and Milan- fashion capitals of the world.

1990

Isetan opened its first department store in Lot10 shopping centre, Kuala Lumpur. With a Customer First initiative as a guiding principal in all aspects of serving the customers, Isetan Kuala Lumpur successfully launched a card member service club to promptly respond to various customer’s needs.

1998

On May 30, 1998, Isetan Kuala Lumpur opened its flagship store at Suria KLCC, situated next to the Petronas Twins Towers (the tallest building in the world at the time). With an exciting range of merchandise catering to the entire family and occupying over a quarter of a million square feet of retail space, Isetan KLCC has become a major landmark in the retail industry.

2007 – 2019

In 2007, Isetan set up its third departmental store in The Gardens, Mid Valley, taking up 150,000 sq ft and spread over four levels. The fourth store opened in April 2012 at 1 Utama, Selangor. Isetan occupies 99,000 sq ft and covers three levels at 1 Utama Complex. Till today, Isetan continues to aim for high customer satisfaction and is always devoted to provide customers with the best and most innovative products.
